A Grid and a Conversation: Morris Adjmi Architects

ARCHITECTURE-COPYWRITING-JIMMY-STAMP MORRIS ADJMI BOOK

A Grid and a Conversation is the first monograph on the work of Morris Adjmi Architects. ADvsCOPY worked closely with Morris and his team on nearly every aspect of the book, developing its overall structure, writing project descriptions and captions, and moderating the series of conversations that interlace the text to offer unique insight into MA’s practice from several long-time collaborators.

Featuring in-depth descriptions of nearly 30 projects, this generously illustrated book marks the 20th anniversary of the firm. Rather than presenting a chronological survey, the book is organized into five thematic chapters. This structure reflects the contextual nature of Adjmi’s practice and invites readers to consider the ideas that inspire the architecture.

Engaging project narratives explain the designs and give historic context for each project, many of which are built in landmarked districts or post-industrial areas. The text is supported by stunning photography as well as archival imagery and original design sketches.

Each chapter begins with a revealing conversation moderated, transcribed, and edited by ADvsCOPY. Preservation consultant Bill Higgins shares the importance of research when building in historic districts; developer Charles Blaichman discusses the nature of the client-architect relationship, architect Judith Saltzman illuminates the under-appreciated artistry of restoration work, Fred Bland shares insight from his dual roles as commissioner of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and as managing partner of Beyer Blinder Belle, and painter Lyle Starr discusses the artists who influence Morris's work, including Rachel Whiteread, Donald Judd, and Richard Serra.

To ensure the book shared the full story, ADvsCOPY developed and wrote a comprehensive chronological appendix featuring every project the firm completed during their first 20 years. In just a few pages, the graphic index traces their evolution from a small New York office to a national practice with projects under construction in major cities across America.

“Working with Jimmy on A Grid and a Conversation was illuminating and enjoyable. From overarching concepts to the smallest caption, he crystalized my thoughts and ideas with just the right tone. He found and refined a voice for the firm that I always knew was there, but could never articulate. I've alway found writing difficult, but with Jimmy it was a pleasure.”
